"PATCH"  PETERSON

Western Art

"Patch" grew up on a small farm in northern Utah . His infatuation with nature, cowboys, and our native American Indians, surfaced early. By the age of six, he was creating images of the West out of cardboard. That romantic infatuation with the West compounded with the compulsion to sculpt has evolved as his destiny.

After years of "whittlin' things," and having folks appreciate his efforts, "Patch" decided to pursue his artistic destiny full time in 1973. Since that time he has spent exhilarating hours in libraries, museums, and talking with old timers to research material for his wood sculptures and bronzes. The authenticity of his subjects is an integral part of his works. The smallest detail of his subjects is an integral part of his works. The smallest detail is never overlooked. He is as concerned with how the Indians won their bear claw necklaces as he is with the style of their clothing and their adornments. While libraries have been beneficial, there is nothing like the real thing. His travels have introduced him to many of the different Indian tribes of today. Due to his sincere reverence for their culture, he has befriended many of our native Americans, and has been afforded the rare privilege of attending many of their Pow Wows and tribal gatherings.

Through association with modern mountain men, "Patch" has greatly furthered his knowledge and appreciation of our forefathers. You can recognize and appreciate his comprehension when viewing his bronze of Jim Bridger negotiating his "bull boat" down the Bear River on his historic exploration of the West, or realize the strength portrayed in his life-sized bust called "Beaver Was His Gold."

May his creations bring great joy and happiness to your lives.
