November 17, 1899:
                                                WAR ON UINTA RESERVE
Fort Duchesne, Nov. 11:  James Olsen, a sheepherder, and a Mexican have surrendered themselves up to Capt. Guilfoyle, post commander.  They reported a fight between the sheepman and the Indians on Rock Creek, about forty miles from here.  They say that an Indian by the name of Mountain Sheep was killed.  Olsen says that when he left the sheepmen and Indians were still fighting.  Olsen was locked up in the guard house.  The Mexican was taken to the hospital, having been wounded in the arm.  Lieut. Young  left this morning with a detachment of 60 soldiers for the scene of the trouble.  It is feared here that the soldiers will arrive too late to prevent serious trouble,  as there are only 6 white men there, and about 25 Indians.  Everything is quiet here, and at Whiterocks there are only 30 soldiers left in the post.  A warrant has been issued charging Olsen with murder.  Mountain sheep was a chief and an important man in the tribe.
